Fantastic Stories Anthology

Fantastic Stories of the Imagination is a yearly anthology. Edited by Warren Lapine, Wilder Publications Box 10641, Blacksburg, VA 24063
I’m looking for stories that cover the entire science fiction, fantasy, and horror spectrum. I love magic realism (think Tim Powers and Neil Gaiman) and hard sf. I want a story to surprise me and to take me to unexpected places. I love word play, and would like to see stories with a literary bent, though decidedly not a pretentious bent. I could spend some time telling you what I don’t want, but I’ve found that good stories can make me buy them regardless of how many of my rules they violate. Let your imagination run wild, push and blur the limits of genre, or send me something traditional. I want it to see it all. My experience as an editor tells me that over time I’ll develop preferences and that the anthology will take on its own personality. When that happens I’ll change the guidelines to be more specific, but for now I’m going to explore what’s out there before I decide what direction to go in.
Payment: 10 cents per word on acceptance for original stories (maximum of $250.00) or 2 cents per word for reprints (maximum of $100.00). A check will accompany the contract so no simultaneous submissions please. I am purchasing First English Language Book Rights and non-exclusive electronic rights.
Story length, I have no limit on story length but the longer the story is the better it will have to be.
Sorry no e-mail submissions. Why is this? Don’t you know that e-mail submissions is the future? Yes I do know that, but it’s not the way I want to do this. For me the best part of being an editor is having people over to have slush parties and interacting with them during the reading process. Editing on a screen is a thing devoid of fun or joy, I edit for the fun and joy of it.

Will you accept erotica?

Sure. I've never actually shied away from that. I didn't run a lot of it in Absolute Magnitude, but it did find its way into the magazine. I even published a story involving gay male erotica in it. Being that it was a hard sf magazine (and really no pun was intended there) I was a bit surprised when I only got one letter of protest.

What length are you looking for?
warrenlapine

The story length that I most tended to buy back in the day was 3k to 10k. I purchased nothing under 1k ever, and only a handful of stories under 2k.

Do you want an s.a.s.e with the story, or should I just mark it 'disposable' and include an email address?

I will absolutely take an e-mail address to respond to for those outside of the US.

Low- or No-Magic Accepted?
How do you feel about low- or no-magic fantasy set in alternate universes? Like George R R Martin's political plots -- based in an exotic and imaginative world.

Re: Low- or No-Magic Accepted?
As long as the story would be considered genre I'll look at it.

What about
What about humor? Are humorous sci-fi stories invited?

Multiple submissions
Warren, multiple subs are typically a no-no, but for this anthology will you consider seeing several stories from a single author, or should we wait to hear back from you on each mailed submission? Thanks! Simon

In regards to a recent submission
Mr. Lapine,

I sent you two stories for consideration for this anthology last week and I just now realized I neglected to include a SASE. I apologize!

Would it be okay if I sent you a SASE on Monday or would that muddle up your process? There is contact info in my submission, including an email address, but I'll be happy to send you a SASE. Is that okay?

email sub?
I'm from England and would like to submit something that comes in at a hefty 20,000 words. Would you consider an email sub under the circumstances?

I'm still open. I've only purchased four stories of the twelve that I expect to purchase. Right now it looks as though I'll stay open when it's filled and just start working on #2.

question
Hello Warren,
I am submitting 5 stories for your consideration. If I don't need them returned, might you notify me by mail?
I am in the process of moving and it would be a lot simpler.
Thanks, E.E. King

"For me the best part of being an editor is having people over to have slush parties and interacting with them during the reading process."

As a four-time editor of the Triangulation speculative fiction anthology, I agree: we always sat around the table with the slush pile, doing our reads together, and for my money its the best way to handle the pile -- by seeing what kind of responses a story draws from the editorial staff, and discussing it.

Good luck with the project!

How do you feel about zombie pulp? I say pulp, cause it is what it is, but there's a slight literary bent with some interesting thematic elements and small metaphorical stuff worked in. I know you said you'd publish pretty much whatever you feel is really good, but the market is flooded with stories with zombies, rpg's and sniper fire right now, and I just thought I'd check.

Re: submission
I'll look at it. When I'm editing I stop reading current short fiction other than what I'm getting for submissions. I don't want to be influenced by anything or anyone else who's out there right now, so the long and short of it is that I couldn't care less what the market looks like. I don't edit anthologies with an to the market. I'm trying to produce a book that will stand the test of time, not just have an impact on today's marketplace.

Response time?
Warren, what's your current response time for the anthology? How long before we should query? Thanks,

Re: Response time?
I don't have a hard and fast response tme right now. I'm saying no to the ones that flat out don't work. I'm responding to the ones that come closer less quickly. Once the summer is over I expect to get to a more reasonable 2 weeks to 30 days.

Two Insignificant Questions
Hey Warren,

If you don't mind me asking...
What market do you plan on selling this book in? POD, Amazon, in stores?

And, are you the same Warren Lapine from Weird Tales?
